Were you wondering what to do with that spare $1.4Million you had laying around? Well, if you were, here’s your answer. Volkswagen AG, the parent company of Bugatti , Lamborghini and Bentley has just green lighted the financial backing for a very ambitious project which will add a 4 door sector to the super-exotic car world with the newly unveiled Bugatti Galibier. The performance statistics on this $1,000,000+ machine are nearly as impressive as the extraordinary price tag. The French built 16 cylinder, dual supercharged engine provides the Galibier with a whopping 1,000hp, all while being able to run on either gasoline or flex-fuels.
The jewel of an engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and no less then 8 exhaust pipes at the rear, that’s right eight exhaust pipes at the rear. To compensate for the weight gain from the extra doors and performance, Bugatti has made most of the body out of hand laid carbon fiber, with only the front arches and doors constructed of aluminum. The exterior of the million dollar gem is a two tone scheme of brilliance. With a midnight blue base color and chrome overlays, the Bugatti looks unlike any vehicle ever driven off a production line. However, the attention to brilliance does not stop at the performance and exterior of the car. Much attention has been given to the occupants of the Galibier, including a removable timepiece made by Swiss watchmaker, Parmigiani.
Wolfgang Duerheimer, the former development chief at Porsche AG who took over as head of Bugatti and Bentley in February, has been pushing VW managers to approve production of the Galibier since taking charge, the two people said. Bugatti, which makes about 50 cars a year, has introduced two derivatives of the Veyron since 2008, the Grand Sport and Super Sport models. The Super Sport is the world’s fastest production car, with a top speed of 268 miles per hour. The name Galibier stems from one of France’s most difficult Alpine passes featured in the Tour de France bicycle race and also served as name for an earlier four-door variant called Type 57.
Production of the Galibier 16C is due to start in 2013, one year after the Veyron’s production run is supposed to end. The production numbers and cost will make this the must have vehicle for the upper classes and will add a new strata to the luxury car market.
